Speed skulls zip around quickly and accurately. Power skulls feel heavy and chunky, but responsive. This game handles extremely well, which is important for any fast-paced action game. It’s just far too big a power shift from before you unlock this to after. The rest of the talent tree is fairly standard Roguelite stuff, and I think if they just made you able to sell things sooner that it would fix this problem. It also happens to be arguably the most important skill to unlock, because selling equipment completely changes your ability to take equipment rooms over gold rooms, and how many times you can reroll the shop for new equipment that suits your build. The talent tree is, unfortunately, probably the most flawed part of this game for one big reason: the ability to sell equipment for gold is a capstone you won’t unlock until after a fairly large number of runs. However, you can rescue various NPC characters who will return to your home base, and during each run you collect Dark Quartz which is a meta currency used to upgrade your talent tree. Meta ProgressionĪs is required for the Roguelike genre, when you die, you start from the first area again. The two inscriptions are weak on their own, but getting more of the same ones will increase the effect. Each upgrade brings additional powers, passive abilities, visual effects and an upgraded character sprite, so you can make even the lowly Swordsman skull feel just as epic as the Arch Lich.Ī piece of equipment the main effect (Aerial attack speed, movement speed, triple jump) is always active. This allows you to upgrade any skull to Legendary rank for that run. When you find a skull that you don’t need, you have the option to destroy it for bone fragments. Pound your foes into oblivion as the powerful Minotaur! Perhaps you’ll find the legendary Grim Reaper skull, and very literally bring death to your enemies! Run circles around (and through) your enemies as the speedy Ninja. You begin each run as the titular, diminutive Skul, but you can obtain the skulls of dead adventurers, beasts, and figures from legend - and become them. Perhaps the biggest draw is the sheer number of playable characters. There are minibosses and zone bosses, all leading up to the final boss fight against the Last Hero. You battle your way from room to room, sometimes having to choose whether you want money, equipment, or new skulls (more on skulls below). Skul is a 2D, side-scrolling action roguelite game. Shock of all shocks, people on the internet have opinions about how these words are used! I’ve written a piece about how I use the terminology, so read that and if you still disagree, too bad! Gameplay One important note: I’ll be using the term “Roguelite” in this article to describe many of the gameplay elements, and “Roguelike” to refer to the category broadly. Available on: Steam, Playstation, Xbox, Switch. In this piece, I’d like to share my thoughts with you on Skul: The Hero Slayer. I’ve played many, so in this While Rome Burns feature I’ll be discussing various games I’ve played. My favorite kind of game for many years has been the Roguelike/lite genre. He looks far more threatening here than in the actual game.
